The Trefaes prefix was registered with the WPCS in 1959 by Carys’ grandfather, the late S O James, although the first welsh cob mares at the stud (both foaled in 1949) were Trefaes Polly (Deinol Welsh Comet x Polly of Hercws) and Trefaes Nans (Deinol Welsh Comet x Hercws Victory Pride).
WELSH COBS AT TREFAES
Deinol Welsh Comet foaled in 1946 was by Hercws Welsh Comet and out of a mare called Deinol Bloss who was sired by the George Prince of Wales winner in 1933 & 1939: Myrtle Welsh Flyer. The reason that this welsh cob stallion does not appear in more pedigrees is that he was exported as a six year old to the Government of Pakistan, to produce useful part breds.
The Dam of Trefaes Polly, Polly of Hercws was one of the top show mares of the post-war era just as her own dam, Teify of Hercws had been pre war -winning the George Prince of Wales Cup in 1936 & 1937. The pedigree contains an abundance of Ceitho Welsh Comet and can be traced back to the 1850’s, long before the Welsh Pony and Cob Society was founded in 1901.
The Dam of Trefaes Nans, Hercws Victory Pride (Hercws Welsh Comet x Goyan Black Bess), also features the pedigree of Ceitho Welsh Comet in both the dam and sire’s pedigree and as the majority of the current welsh cobs at the stud are descended from Trefaes Nans, (via her daughter Trefaes Brackenleaf by Rhandir Cadno), one can safely say that the welsh cobs at the stud are directly descended from the very earliest welsh cobs.
Trefaes Brackenleaf was an exceptional dam for the stud and produced a number of important offspring including:
Trefaes Bessie (f.1984 by Furthermoors Solomon) (pictured left) 2nd at the RW as a yearling and 2 year old (to Corscaron Moonlight in 1985 and Nebo Princess Ann in 1986) Youngstock Champion at Lampeter (beating her two rivals from the Royal Welsh). Dam of Trefaes Brenin Du (by Cyttir Telynor) and Trefaes Bonheddwr (by Cathedine Flying Express) – both Champions and both exported.
Trefaes Black Pearl (f.1986 by Trefaes Toreth) dam of Trefaes Golden Pearl (f.1992 by Horeb Euros) who won the Royal Welsh Junior Mare class in 1999 and was 3rd in the senior class in 2000 as well as numerous Supreme in Shows. Trefaes Golden Pearl (pictured right) herself being just as significant female line for the welsh cob, having produced amongst others: Drogeda Pearly King, Drogeda Stormy Tempest, Drogeda Princess Rachel & Drogeda The Outlaw. Trefaes Black Pearl’s other offspring include: Trefaes Black Marvel f.2004 and Trefaes Black Flyer f.2005 (both by Gwynfaes Culhwch) pictured below at the 2011 Royal Welsh.
Trefaes Black Flyer was sold as a foal at the Brightwells Autumn Cob Sales for £4,400 and has proved himself a worthy investment for the Rhydeilian Stud, winning numerous medals when shown in the youngstock classes as well as a silver medal when shown in his first year out as a stallion. He is also the sire of, amongst others, Rhydeilian Orchid who sold for £7,500 at the 2009 Autumn Sales.
Trefaes Black Velvet (f.1988 by Furthermoors Solomon) sold for 2,600 gns as a 2 year old but bought back by the stud in 1996 and producing amongst others, Trefaes True Velvet (f.1999 by Fronarth Victor)
Trefaes Boneddiges (f.1990 by Dimbeth Sion) – still at the stud
Trefaes Bracky’s Girl (f.2002 by Trefaes Brenin Victor) – also still at the stud
WELSH MOUNTAIN PONIES AT TREFAES STUD
The tradition of breeding Section As goes back almost as far as the Section Ds, with the first two mares that were acquired both being out of Bryniau Grey Lady: Bryniau Playmate (f.1952 by Owain Glyndwr) & Bryniau Greylight (f.1953 by Criban Bantam)
One of Bryniau Greylight’s daughters was Trefaes Grey Lady (pictured above) (f.1968 by Belvoir Sundowner) who was the winner of many championships herself and also produced the following progeny:
Trefaes Gay Go Lady (pictured right)(f. 1988 by Eppynt Orange Pip) successfully shown as a novice brood mare and dam of Trefaes Glamour Girl (f.2001 by Trefaes Cinnamon) & Trefaes Gay Go Beauty (f.2002 also by Trefaes Cinnamon) who still reside at the stud.
Trefaes Guardsman (pictured below) (f.1992 by Skellorn Daylight and now owned by the Teifi Stud) who was Male Champion at the Royal Welsh in 1999 (in hand) and won the harness class at the same show in 2000, and won the Traditional Ridden Class at the 2011 International Show (picture below)
Trefaes Grey Mist (f.1993 by Trefaes Carwyn) who won the Gwyn Price Royal Welsh progeny trophy at the 1994 Show.
